Where to get legal help in Mauritius

Each link goes to the body's own website, which publishes its current telephone number and address. juris does not copy them here because it cannot check when they change, and a wrong number is worse than none. juris does not recommend, rank or refer you to any individual lawyer, and takes no fee from anyone listed.

Legal aid

You may qualify for legal aid, and the threshold changed recently

The Legal Aid and Legal Assistance Act 2025 replaced the 1973 Act on 5 January 2026 and raised the means test. Many pages online, and the Attorney-General's own consolidated PDF of the old Act, still show the repealed figures.

Legal aid requires average monthly household income not exceeding 25,000 rupees, and assets not exceeding one million rupees, excluding clothing, tools of trade and the subject matter of the proceedings.

Subject to section 8(3), no person shall be eligible to obtain legal aid in civil or criminal proceedings unless - (a) his average monthly household income does not exceed 25,000 rupees; and (b) his assets, excluding his wearing apparel, tools of trade and, if any, the subject matter of the proceedings, do not exceed one million rupees.
