Letters you can send

These are letters to the other side, or to a body that takes written complaints. None of them is a court filing.

Letter contesting a dismissal

To: Your former employer

Send this before, or alongside, going to the Ministry of Labour. It puts your position on record with a date.

Letter asking for a rental deposit back

To: Your landlord

Send this once you have moved out and the deposit has not come back. It fixes the date you asked.

Letter of demand: money owed to you

To: The person or business that owes you

Use it before a claim. Most courts expect you to have asked first, and it costs nothing to have asked.

Letter disputing a debt claimed from you

To: Whoever is claiming the money

Send it as soon as you receive a demand you do not accept, so that your dispute is on record from the start.

Written complaint to the Equal Opportunities Commission

To: The Equal Opportunities Commission

The Act requires the complaint to be in writing and to set out the details of the alleged act of discrimination. This skeleton gives it that shape.
