20F. Offences relating to registration plates
(1) Where a person uses, causes or permits to be used a motor vehicle or
trailer on a road with a registration plate that—
(a) is in contravention to this Act or regulations made under this
Act;
(b) has been defaced or altered;
(c) is fixed in such a away as to be obscured, obstructed or rendered not easily distinguishable, he shall commit an offence and
shall, on conviction, be liable to a fine not exceeding 2,000
rupees.
(2) Where a motor vehicle or trailer does not bear on it a registration
mark, an identification number assigned to it by the Commissioner under
section 34 or such other identification number as may have been issued for
it under this Act or regulations made thereunder, this fact shall be regarded
as prima facie evidence that the motor vehicle or trailer has not been registered, and the Police may detain the vehicle or trailer until inquiries have
been made.
