18. Time limit for swearing in (1) Where a person elected to serve in the Regional Assembly is not present at the meeting referred to in section 12, he shall be administered the oath of office by the Chairperson or Deputy Chairperson of the Regional Assembly at the next ordinary meeting at which he is present. (2) Subject to subsection (3), where at the expiration of 3 months from his election or return under section 11 or 20, a member has not taken the oath of office, he shall be disqualified from assuming the duties and responsibilities of a Member and his seat shall become vacant. (3) The Regional Assembly may resolve, before the expiration of the period of 3 months of the election of a Member who has not taken the oath of office, either on its own motion or at the request of that Member, to extend the period of 3 months to a period not exceeding 4 months at the end of which period, the seat of the member shall become vacant in case he has still not taken the prescribed oath. (4) The Chairperson of the Regional Assembly shall immediately notify the President of any extension of time granted in accordance with subsection (3).
