35. Sole right to issue currency (1) The Bank shall have the sole right to issue Mauritius currency notes and coins. (2) Any person, other than the Bank, who issues Mauritius currency notes, bank notes or coins or any documents or tokens payable to bearer on demand having the appearance of or purporting to pass as legal tender or as currency, shall commit an offence and shall, on conviction, be liable to a fine not exceeding 2 million rupees and to penal servitude.
