Section 44: Surrender of firearm

44. Surrender of firearm (1) The Commissioner may, whenever he has reasonable ground to believe that— (a) the holder of a firearm licence, other than a dealer in firearms, leaves Mauritius frequently or intends to leave Mauritius for a period exceeding 3 months; and (b) any firearm or ammunition in his possession may not be kept in safe custody or such safe custody as the Commissioner thinks fit during the period of his absence from Mauritius, request the holder of the licence— (i) to surrender the firearm and any ammunition to the Commissioner during the period of such absence; or (ii) to give to the Commissioner such information as he may require regarding the safe custody of the firearm and any ammunition. (2) Any person who fails to comply with a request of the Commissioner made under subsection (1) shall commit an offence and shall, on conviction, be liable to pay a fine not exceeding 50,000 rupees.
