56. Liability of owners of gears used in commission of offences
(1) Where a vehicle, gear or any other article is used in the commission
of an offence under this Act, the owner shall be deemed to have committed
the offence unless he proves that—
(a) he was not a party or privy to the commission of the offence;
and
(b) he took all reasonable steps to prevent the use of the vehicle,
gear or any other article for the commission of the offence.
(2) Where a boat or vessel is used in the commission of an offence under
this Act, the owner, in addition to the master, shall be deemed to have
committed the offence unless he proves that—
(a) he was not a party or privy to the commission of the offence;
(b) he took all reasonable steps to prevent the use of the boat or
vessel for the commission of the offence.
